People who don’t like babies often have a predictable complaint: “They’re all alike.” The time you’ve spent getting to know the child in your life, though, has shown just how wrong those haters are. Baby development is a magical time, and each child has a special path.
His laugh is immediately recognizable, even if other children are around. It rises above, like someone singing in a crowded room of talkers. His wobbly wiggle from one place to another – you’d know it anywhere. And when he says something to you, with words or without, it’s phrased in his own particular way. He is his own person, already.
He has his own particular likes and dislikes, too, as you know well. There’s a good chance you’ve seen some of your own facial expressions reflected back at you in that tiny little face. And when he runs across something unfamiliar or scary, he knows just who to reach for to get some reassurance.
His math skills will come later. For now he probably just knows the idea of “more.” And someday he’ll have discipline to see something through to the finish. Today he’s just learning how to repeat a little, simple action to make it happen again and again.
It’s all part of learning and growing, and finding out how to be exactly what he needs to be: himself.
